Toyota Kirloskar Motors has been one of the most reliable brand Indian market has ever seen. Like most Japanese brands, they were never very flashy or flamboyant with their vehicles but they served the purpose, very well. Try to think of one brand you never find people complaining about and immediately Toyota will come to mind. They take their own sweet time in launching new models and even when they do, they aren’t much different from what was available already. But then, you can’t improve upon perfection, can you?
With the start of this year, Toyota introduced the Fortuner with a 5 speed automatic transmission instead of the 4 speed one on the 2 wheel drive model. The TRD sportive model was introduced as a mainstream model instead of a special edition one. Fortuner has been a successful model for Toyota just like the Innova, or the Corolla or anything else they launched in India.
This year however, they are planning more for the Fortuner. The Toyota Fortuner is a desirable vehicle but its price is steep and the launch of many other SUVs in India has affected the sales of Fortuner as bit. There have been some changes in Fortuner since it was launched but they were all cosmetic. To make its presence in another category, they might launch a smaller capacity version of Fortuner. The engine on offer might be a 2.5l D4D with around 140 Bhp power while retaining all other aspects of the 3.0 l Fortuner. This would bring down the costs and also aid the fuel efficiency. They are launching this version in Malaysia and if it makes it here, it might give a tough time to the very popular Mahindra XUV 500 even if it is priced slightly over it.
Another car that would come from Toyota stable this year might be Toyota Vios. This car would compete against cars like Honda City, Suzuki SX4 or Hyundai Verna and fill the spot between the Etios sedan and Corolla. This car has already been launched in Thai market and is based on the Yaris hatchback. The car shares design cues with Corolla and Etios and looks elegant from the pictures we found online. If this car comes to India, it would stir things up for sure in this category and might actually be a popular one among potential customers.
Compact SUV has suddenly become the trend with all car manufacturers in India and Toyota can’t be the only brand unaffected. To compete with the sub 4 m SUVs coming from other brands, they might launch Toyota Rush SUV close to the end of this year. It is a funky looking SUV with the reliability of a Toyota. There is not much known about it yet but if Toyota is making its presence in any segment, other manufacturers surely need to be ready with their weapons.
It was also said by company’s managing director that their luxury brand Lexus might also arrive in India this year. Nothing was said about the models that would come first but the arrival is certain. It would give people an alternative to the offerings made by other luxury car manufacturers in India.
